Now onto today's color story:
The color citron (and all it's variations) is a great example of how color trends evolve.
.
Color trends usually start on the fringes. That's why I like to say, "pay attention to what you don't like". Your negative reaction may stem from the fact that it's "new" and your eye hasn't become adjusted to it. For example this ad was from around 2006. When I've shown this the reaction is usually negative. Comments like, "I could never wear that color next to my skin". But it's amazing how the more we see a color over time, the more we start to accept it and before you know it we're buying it. Probably not in this super saturated undiluted Dior couture creation but it'll start sifting into the mix of everything you buy from your clothes right down the line to the plastic storage bins you stash them in for the next season.
just for fun check out this scene from the movie:
So once again I've shared my thoughts, now share yours.
Leave a comment and a yard of each of the
prints pictured above
could be yours.
The randomly chosen winner will be announced next Wed. along with a new color story
and another
GIVEAWAY!
Now we're getting into something I like. Love that you have been updating this blog lately too.
ReplyDeleteI love the color stories, but I love this combo more!!!
ReplyDeleteGrey is one of my favorite colors! It's brings out other colors so well. It reminds me of the 50's in a good way...haha!
ReplyDeleteThanks for a great giveway!
I love the citron and gray together. Probably my favorite color combo.
ReplyDeleteWe are renovating a home and it's colors are gray/citron...I love it..and can't seem to get enough of it...
ReplyDeleteI also need to watch that movie again...it so fun!
It took me a long long long time to not bristle at the yellow-gray combination that has been so popular over the last few years. I'm finally starting to see things in this scheme and think they're cute. They're still not "me" though, so don't enter me in the drawing. I just wanted to comment on the evolution idea. :)
ReplyDeleteI love this combo- its great for any season IMHO!!
ReplyDeleteI also love that you are posting on the blog more!
I see these colors as great for the "One Yard Wonders" projects - lots of things made for ME:)

ReplyDeleteThis is one of my all time favorite color combinations.
ReplyDeleterebekahricker at yahoo dot com
This is one of my very favorite color combinations--love this fabric collection!
ReplyDeleteThis is so true! When I was in a quilt guild in CA in 2000, the old ladies thought I was weird for wanting quilt blocks in purple & lime green, or orange & blue. Now I see it everywhere!
ReplyDeleteI'm excited that grey is back, but I prefer the lighter color.
This is a wonderful color combo, I'm already mulling over what to make.
ReplyDeleteLove this, and as gray is the new black it is perfect to go with everything ... especially citron!
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the new blog updates, have really been enjoying them!!

I'm incorporating fabric and quilted details into my wedding decor and have had my eye on these fabrics for a while. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity! :)
ReplyDeleteit is fascinating how something that you originally didn't like can end up becoming a favourite... I find fashion has that effect on me a lot and since becoming a sewist, so has fabric combinations.
ReplyDeleteBelieve it or not, I'm seeing this color combo at a lot of weddings lately. It's summery and elegant at the same time. Love it!
ReplyDeleteI remember painting color wheels at art school and then learning color theory and suddenly grey was an actual color for me... (AND I can't believe I have spelt color the American way 4 times now!! Feels weird LOL)
ReplyDeleteI love this color combination. It's one of my most favorites. I saw an ad in the NY TImes a few months ago, I think it was Eileen Fisher...a gray sweater with a citron scarf wrapped around the neck. It was wonderful!
ReplyDeleteI just love it all!!! and I love how gorgeous fabric is always, always 100% fat free ;-)
ReplyDeleteI always love the way colors look with gray.
ReplyDeleteThese are my favorites colors. I just ordered Citron Soleil to make myself something...not sure what, but I couldn't resist. Thank you for the great color story:)
ReplyDeleteI really like the citron! Its pairing with gray helps soften it.
ReplyDeletebig fan of the bicycles. and thank you very much for explaining the whole "trends" thing. i've been asked that question many times and always find it hard to explain the phenomenon you so very well described. yay! for citron and grey! (and personally, i've been obsessed with that dior "yellow" for quite some time. loooovely!)
ReplyDeleteJust love this color combination. Love those fabrics too!

ReplyDeletedoodiesbooties@yahoo.com
I love the citron grey combo. It was interesting what you said about color trends. I remember years ago, watching Trading Spaces--the designers were using light blue and chocolate together. I thought that was such an awful color combination for home decor. Eventually, I got used to it. Then I loved it. Then I got sick of it. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chance to win some fabric!
I love this color combination. I made a quilt last year for our master bedroom using these colors and I love it more each day.
ReplyDeleteLove these colors together!

ReplyDeletethis colorway taunts me. I always thought that it was a strange combination but it keeps surfacing in different places and now I'm eating my words!!
ReplyDeleteI like how it's bright, but not crazy bright. The yellowish color adds the perfect touch of color to the darker colors.
ReplyDeleteThis is one pf my favorite color combinations ever!
ReplyDeleteI have been struggling to come up with a color for our main bathroom. I wanted to do something fun and colorful, not our usual brown/earth tones. I have been trying to force myself into a turquoise color, but after seeing this post, I am doing GRAY and CITRON!! Just the right amount of color... and I will be ahead of the trend instead of behind:) Thanks!

ReplyDeleteOh! I love this collection! Pick me!
ReplyDeleteI couldn't see myself wearing the Dior dress, the colour is a little too intense for this pale strawberry blond. But I love the collection. Just enough of each colour.
ReplyDeleteThis color story combination is a big winner - can see it for decorating with quilts. It has a pop yet the grey subdues some. Please enter me into the drawing! alternate email mlwright29(at)hotmail(dot)com

ReplyDeleteI think that sometimes when we see a colour in isolation we can't 'interpret' it into our lives. It is only when we see it combined with a more familiar colour that we can say that's fabulous. I like this combination. It is a great example of how to learn to mix colours up.
ReplyDeletecitron/grey ....la classe Ă©ternelle!!! un classique intemporel
ReplyDeletei love it!!
Interesting story about color. Love the fabric combo. Thanks for the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteI love the way the gray compliments the citron and citron becomes alive with the gray! Very very nice!

ReplyDeleteLove this color combo!!!! It reminds me of a cold, windy day on the beach....which is something I have been wanting for a long time. the beach in the summer is great, but nothing beats sitting on the beach in october in a big ole hoodie, just listening to the ocean!

Absolutely love it! Like the punches of black with it as well! You are so right...sometimes a person can't "get into the color" until they have "lived" around it for a while. This color business is fascinating!!
ReplyDeleteI have been searching for a color combination for my daughters room and I just love this. I have always loved gray maybe because I love elephants. This just puts together the way I pictured it.
ReplyDeleteI love this fabric collection!!! It's something I would have never walked in and picked out myself but I can see so many possibilities! It is gorgeous!!! Thank you for opening my eyes!!! Amazing!
ReplyDeleteLove Love love the grey! And the lemon drops you have in that picture remind me of how my grandma always had a bowl of them sitting in her livingroom. I'd sneak them until my mouth was sore! I love the citron and grey together. It's an exciting new combination!
ReplyDeleteI love the color theories you are presenting! Really interesting about the darker the hair, the more intense the color and vise versa!! I never knew!! Love love love the high contrast, and modern statement they make!
ReplyDeleteCitron and all it's derivitives has been a long time favorite of mine - and i love putting it with red! :) Thanks for the chance to win!
I've been wanting to get a collection of new, "fresh" fabrics and this is the one. I'm shopping for a quilt pattern now.
ReplyDeleteI am loving this colorway as I have found that I love the grey/citron combination. These fabrics are awesome and I have 2 local quilt shops to get these in!
ReplyDeletea whole yard of each! oh the possibilities!!!!!! I am not sure I like the picture, and the 80's poofy frizzy hair was ugly. some things are too much. I think it is a perfectly fine color mixed with gray, and you have proven that with this wonderful collection.
ReplyDeleteYou are making me feel better about changing my mind on colors I strongly dislike. Orange and mustardy yellow were my least-liked colors, and now I want to quilt with them in a big way. Your post made me feel less like a wishy-washy follower--I am someone who rejects the new and dislikes change, and it's no surprise I'm that way with color as well.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway.
wordygirl at earthlink dot net

ReplyDeleteThe citron isn't usually a color I go for, but it's fabulous with the gray!
ReplyDeleteabsolutely love the citron and grey collection!
ReplyDeletelooking at it brings to mind lemonade and silver. both of these are cooling to the mind. maybe it is because we are in the middle of summer with my a/c on the fritz that i find these prints so refreshing.
bold and crisp and cool yet lemon is a warm color, non? and very retro... so much that i envision sitting at a 60's diner, with yellow arborite tables and covered seats, sipping on cool lemonade, wearing a skirt of the large black and yellow flowers. the waitress behind the long counters of course would be wearing an apron from one of the prints. and of course outside the window people would be riding bicycles.
it also reminds me of the 60's and my mother as she would wear prints like these. she was bold for women of her day and i loved her clothes.
i love it!
My daughter and I love this new line!
ReplyDeleteMy son and his fiancé are not quilt people but I wanted to make a quilt for their wedding, so I showed them this collection of fabric and they fell in love with it. We plan to make a contemporary quilt with this fabric and this is perfect for the couple! This yellow and grey combination has shown up in their wedding plans!

ReplyDeletethanks for the opportunity!
Where were you three years ago when I was getting married???? We incorporated these colors into our wedding almost 3 years ago this September. We had a vintage yellow Schwinn tandem bicycle that provided the inspiration. My husband is a cycling addict so it only seemed fitting to incorporate the tandem and the color scheme into our wedding. Oh the fun things I could have done with these fabrics!
ReplyDeleteLove the clip from The Devil Wears Prada almost as much as I love these fabrics. I had been looking for this color combination and was delighted when I found it in some of my favorite Michael Miller fabric designs.
ReplyDeleteThis fabric is awesome!!
ReplyDeleteLOVE the color combination!! The funny thing is I was just thinking the other day how pretty much everything we wear is- without us realizing it- exactly what the fashion industry is telling us to wear. I was looking at all the trendy outfits and accessories and thinking how all the young girls probably felt like they had come up with the idea when in reality it was put together by someone long before they ever saw and purchased it!
ReplyDeleteWhenever I see this color combo I'm amazed at whoever thought to pair gray with yellow...Wonderful!...and now I see it everywhere. :)
ReplyDeleteI have never really been much for yellow, but I actually like this combo. It would make a cute spring dress!
ReplyDeleteI'm sad :(
ReplyDeleteI can't find any Zoology in Citron fabric anywhere! I am pregnant with my first baby and am choosing various MM grey and citron prints for everything but the zoology in citron is nowhere to be found. Can someone help me??
Thanks for considering me,
Adele.
There's no doubt, the guy is completely right.
ReplyDeleteYellow has never been my favorite color but everytime I enter a fabric shop I am drawn to the yellows. Putting it with gray makes it absoulty stunning. I love this whole collection. By the way my kitchen is painted in 4 shades of yellow. Go figure LOL
