Introducing Michael Miller Fabrics Brand Ambassador - Stephanie Cunnyngham !

We are so pleased to introduce Stephanie Cunnyngham as our fourth Michael Miller Fabrics Brand Ambassador!

Stephanie has a contagious enthusiasm for sewing and quilting. We love her whimsical aesthetic.

Hello! My name is Stephanie Cunnyngham, and I am a wife, boy-mom, and farmhouse-dwelling girl who loves sewing and living in the country. I grew up in rural Indiana and have lived here all my life. I married a handsome man I met at a Civil War reenactment, and we have two very handsome, energetic, and fun-loving little boys.

I guess you can say I have always loved being creative. My mom and I would spend Saturdays painting or sewing when I still lived at home. My granny lived two miles down the road, and she was an avid quilter that was always sewing something at her kitchen table or making quilts to sell. I would go visit her and she would try to teach me to hand-quilt or crochet, but she was left-handed and I was young, so we would get frustrated with the sewing quickly and decide we would rather just spend our time together talking and eating pie. I carried my love for art and creativity to college with me, and my first college degree is in Art History from DePauw University. I loved taking art classes in college and learning about composition, layers, and working with different methods or creating. When I got married and moved away from home, my mom bought me my first sewing machine, a white machine with purple accents by Kenmore from Sears. I made curtains for our apartment and aprons to sell at markets and fairs.

Right now, I really enjoy all things quilting, and I have published a couple of mini quilt patterns that I sell through my etsy shop, and I have had had two patterns published in Homespun Magazine. Pattern design is definitely something I would like to continue to develop.

•       My first major sewing project that I made by myself was a reproduction ball gown to wear to a fundraiser for a historical society I volunteer at. It involved layers of taffeta, organza, and lots of trim.

My first quilt was made from the scraps leftover from all the cotton aprons I was making. I used very fluffy batting and hand quilted it. It was a learning project, that’s for sure.

2. Other hobbies I enjoy are antique shopping, gardening, and decorating (and re-decorating) my house. I also love planning vacations, some of which we actually take!

3. My favorite color sometimes changes with the season, but one color I love in almost all shades is green. Jadeite green, mint green, grass green. You will find those colors pretty much all over my house. I also love rich purples, and I am starting to develop a love for yellow.

4. As far as a dream vacation, I’d have to say anywhere with mountains.

5. My granny tried to teach me to sew, but it was really my mom who taught me techniques and how to use a sewing machine. She is fantastic as sewing clothes and made my wedding dress. As far as most of my quilting knowledge and techniques I have learned, I am mostly self taught. My favorite things to make are small quilted projects like bags/pouches, mini quilts, and pillows.

6. Oh, how I love food. If I could only pick three things to eat if I was stranded on a desert island, they would be strawberries, chocolate chip cookies, and bacon. But mostly bacon…

7. I also have a Master’s Degree in Nursing, and I currently work as a consultant for two different hospitals. Over the last few years, though, I have started spending more time at home and less time at work so I can focus on enjoying my boys and on turning my sewing hobby into more than just a hobby. In 5 years, I would love to see myself focusing just on sewing, pattern writing, and possibly even fabric design.

Thank you so much Stephanie!

Introducing Michael Miller Fabrics Brand Ambassador - Mel Beach!

We are so pleased to introduce our third Michael Miller Fabrics Brand Ambassador - Mel Beach!

We appreciate Mel’s modern, bold, fun style. Her quilting and teaching experience (plus award-winning designs!) are a perfect fit with Michael Miller Fabrics.

Mel Beach is a San Jose, CA based quilt artist, teacher and lecturer, who breaks away from tradition by adding her own modern, beautifully textured and colorful twists.  She loves stretching her creativity through her completion of 70+ quilt challenges at the local and international level.  Many of her challenge quilts have been exhibited locally, juried into national quilt shows and traveling exhibits, published in books/magazines, earned awards/ribbons, and selected as Finalists.

She is an Aurifil Artisan and a Featured Artist on The Quilt Show with Alex Anderson and Ricky Tims (episode 2112).

1. What was your first sewing project?
In my last year of graduate school, I decided to make my first quilt out of a stack of t-shirts.  I didn’t know about stabilizer, stitching with ¼” seam, quilting, or binding.  I had much to learn, but I absolutely loved the process and that quilt traveled with me for several years.  Once I finished my T-shirt quilt, I went out and purchased quilting cottons, and haven’t looked back since!

2. What other hobbies do you enjoy?
My other hobbies include fabric dyeing, sketching, and photography.  I have two dogs, aka Studio Assistants, Panda and Susie Q, who enjoy going for walks, snuggling, and keeping watch over the studio while I create.  For the past 2.5 years, I’ve been taking comedy improv classes and performing in shows similar to Whose Line Is it Anyway with my classmates.  Not only are these classes loads of fun, but they help me to think quick on my feet, embrace mistakes, and be a more confident public speaker.

3. What is your favorite color?
I love working with vibrant colors!!  Some of my favorite colors include teal, raspberry and lime!  I enjoy incorporating pops of black and white prints.  I rarely work with brown but keep challenging myself to incorporate more brown fabric into my stash and quilts.

4. Where is your dream vacation?
I would love to travel abroad more, with France and Australia at the top of my Must-See List!!

5. Who taught you how to sew?
As a child, both of my grandmothers introduced me to different needle arts.  I remember entering some of my work into a 4-H/County Fair competition.  Many years later, my mother introduced me to using a sewing machine and helped me assemble my first T-shirt quilt.  Initially I learned a lot about quilting from reading books/magazines and watching Alex Anderson on Simply Quilts.  Once I moved to California, I started to enroll in quilting workshops through my local quilt shops and quilt guild, and I am eternally thankful for all the amazing artists/teachers who generously shared different techniques, tools and tips that are part of my quilting toolbox!

6. What food could you eat everyday?
Herr’s Sour Cream & Onion chips!!

7. What do you want to be doing in five years?
In 5 years, I hope to be a published author and teaching on the international level (perhaps in France and/or Australia?!?)

Thanks so much Mel!

Introducing Michael Miller Fabrics Brand Ambassador - Erica Jackman!

We are so pleased to introduce our second Michael Miller Fabrics Brand Ambassador
Erica Jackman!

Erica Jackman been blogging at kitchentablequilting.com for the past 7 years. She is originally from Texas but have also lived in Utah, Southern California, and currently lives in Oregon. Erica Jackman is a mother of three children and one bonus child as her and her husband became foster parents a year ago.

In addition to making quilts, She started writing quilt patterns three years ago and has completely fallen in love with that process. Erica makes both paper and PDF patterns and are available at shop.kitchentablequilting.com. You can follow along with her projects and progress on her blog or on Instagram!

1. What was your first sewing project?

I started sewing nine years ago when I was pregnant with my second child. My husband worked long hours, so I decided that I would buy a sewing machine and teach myself to make some simple baby items. Three months later, I made my first quilt and I have been hooked ever since.

2. What other hobbies do you enjoy?
There are other hobbies? At this point in my life, I feel lucky to just have time to sew. I do enjoy listening to audiobooks and playing the piano when I can squeeze them in.

3. What is your favorite color?
I love light, purple-y grays and cobalt blue.

4. Where is your dream vacation?
The Faroe Islands

5. Who taught you how to sew?
My mom never really enjoyed sewing, but she tried to teach me when I was a teenager. When I finally decided that I wanted to learn, my mother-in-law taught me a few things but I am mostly self-taught.

6. What food could you eat everyday?
I should probably say something healthy here, but the honest answer is pizza.

7. What do you want to be doing in five years?
I hope that I continue to challenge myself creatively and that I am continuing to write patterns that are fun and accessible to quilters of all skill levels. I also hope that after some diligent work, I am able to get my scraps under control sometime in the next 5 years!

Thanks so much Erika!

Introducing Michael Miller Fabrics Brand Ambassador - Melanie Traylor!

We are so pleased to introduce our first Michael Miller Fabrics Brand Ambassador
Melanie Traylor!

Melanie has an undeniable passion for quilting. We love her impressive blog content and pics.
https://southerncharmquilts.com/

I have been quilting since 2008 and run a small business selling my quilts and patterns.  I'm as obsessed as one could get about patchwork and sitting for hours to sew it up together.  I consider myself self-taught, but also feel quilting is in my blood.  I've received a few tips (and a few quilts) gifted from my grandmother and watched endless video tutorials on YouTube and other blogs from my early years.
I host quilt alongs on my blog often, and have hosted quilt alongs for sewing related companies such as Coats and Clark, Havel's Sewing and Bari J.  Most recently I organized the making of three quilts with the help of almost fifty different quilters to gift to a fellow quilter whose home was destroyed in the Paradise, CA fires this past November.  I love quilting, I love my fellow quilters and I'm passionately in love with fabric.
I currently live in north Alabama with my family.  You can picture me there with my house tucked in the woods, sitting behind my sewing machine and sewing the days away.

What was your first sewing project?
I was in 7th grade home economics class, around 1995, and made a couple of throw pillows and a pair of pajama bottoms.  It was all a hot mess, but I LOVED it!

What other hobbies do you enjoy?
I’m almost always deeply involved in some novel or another.  Reading is my fave!  I also love to travel and hike to see beautiful landscapes. I like to embroider and crochet when I can.

What is your favorite color?
It’s hard to pick a favorite!  I guess I lean towards jewel tones and navy blue.  When it comes to fabric though, I’m in love with low volume prints and can’t seem to make a quilt without them.

Where is your dream vacation?
When I was a girl I dreamed of visiting the Grand Canyon and Hawaii and was able to go to both as an adult.  Most recently I dreamed of Scotland and was able to go there this past year.  There are not any current dream vacations, but I’m sure inspiration will hit soon. ðŸ˜‰

Who taught you how to sew?
I’m self-taught.  I learned from doing, and books, online tutorials and Youtube videos.  My grandmother also showed me a thing or two.

What food could you eat everyday?
This changes often, but right now I’m totally addicted to those jalapeno white cheddar puffs from Simply.  It’s gotten a bit out of hand, actually.  I’m still a 12-year-old when it comes to food.  Hide your puffs from me, people!

What do you want to be doing in five years?
I’ve got two kids in college right now and I’d like to see that done and go back to school myself.

Thanks so much Melanie!

Be sure to follow her to see what Michael Miller Fabric goodness she will be coming up with!

Greetings from Nashville!

GREETINGS FROM NASHVILLE
We partnered with Aurifil Threads & Heidi Pridemore to create this custom 'Greetings from Nashville, Tennessee' tribute quilt. The quilt design was drawn from the classic postcard from The Tichnor Brothers Collection, which is currently held by the Boston Public Library. We love this style of postcard and the design felt wildly appropriate for our first visit to Nashville. The quilt was made using our  Cotton Couture solids + coordinating colors of Aurifil 50wt thread.

We'll be hosting daily challenges centered around the quilt and you'll have a chance to participate whether you're attending QuiltCon or following along from home, so make sure to keep an eye on our Instagram from Thursday (2/21) to Sunday (2/24)!
Visit the Aurifil Threads booth #614 to take a pic with the quilt and send your greetings back home!
