Valencia by Laura Gunn for Michael Miller Fabrics

Valencia is Laura Gunn's newest collection for Michael Miller Fabrics- filled with flowers, beautifully painted birds, fruit and textured geometric patterns. She also decided to add gold metallic details and a new assortment of metallic Painter's Canvas!

We just love the dahlias, gerber daisies and the little metallic accents in this collection! They look beautiful in the adorable dress below sewn by Amy of @amylouwhosews

Laura has been painting and making things since she could hold a crayon. In 2006 she began painting in earnest and discovered her true passion. she's obsessed with color and when she paints, she plays with color, creating just the right amount of contrast and harmony. We feel so lucky  that Laura is a Michael Miller licensed designer!

Laura Gunn & Flutter!

I'm always happy to chime in on Kathy Miller's beautiful blog. I thought I'd talk a bit about my newest line, Flutter. The artwork from Flutter was inspired by vintage drawings--the kind you might find in an old book about birds--with a modern twist.
I really enjoyed creating the artwork for this line. For me, one of the benefits of drawing things from nature is it forces me to really stop and notice the details. I don't think I will ever look at a beetle the same!

I love to incorporate beautiful things from nature into my own decor. So I could hardly wait for some yardage from Flutter to arrive on my doorstep. When it did I plunged right into a guest room makeover.

I added a cushion to a simple Ikea bed frame--making it prettier and a lot more comfortable!  We are big on reading in bed at our house so a comfy headboard goes a long way. I also made a duvet cover using my bird print and a small pillow using fabric from my Poppy Remix collection. And I trimmed it all in some favorite prints from Edges.
I almost forgot the pillow case. I cheated on this one. I just sliced off the end of an existing white pillowcase and added a beetle border. This pillow is no longer in the guest room as my seven year old son has claimed it as his own.

I hope you enjoy working with my new line as much as I have!

-Laura

Laura Gunn- Poppy Remix for the Holidays!

Laura Gunn's Poppy Remix is back by popular demand! Laura checked in with us with a project that is perfect for the holidays!

http://www.michaelmillerfabrics.com/shop/collections/poppy-remix.html

Here's what Laura had to say about it:

"Red is my go to color all year round.  So come December, it's always easy to work in some Christmas decor.  I discovered a few years ago that my poppies can look quite Christmasy with the right accessories.  And with these red and aqua circle garlands they look so cute and retro!"

"When I was making these circle garlands I wanted to incorporate red and white baker's twine. I also wanted the garland strung on something stronger then regular thread.  So I used an old trick of threading the bobbin on my machine with the twine (regular thread on top) and sewing straight through the garland.  It is so easy!!  A friend helped me make a little video tutorial."

Designer Spotlight Friday: Laura Gunn

Hello everyone, it's Laura Gunn and it's a real treat to chime in on Kathy's blog today, especially to talk about my latest line of blenders and basics--Edges.  With Edges I wanted to give sewers interesting colors and textures that would compliment their own designs.  The result is a wide and varied palette. And I can't wait to see all the ways you use it!

As gratifying as it is to see my artwork on fabric, it's even more gratifying to see my fabric in the creations of designers I admire.  With the help of some friends at Michael Miller, I reached out to some of my favorite quilters to see how my latest line, Edges, would inspire them.  And honestly, I feel so honored to have a little bit of me in their beautiful work.

Faith at Fresh Lemon Quilts created this charming mini quilt.  It's like a box of candy.  Yum!  I just love how it shows off how varied the palette is in this collection.

Faith talks us through how she made her quilt here on her blog.

Ashley from Film in the Fridge calls this quilt Edges and Angles. Doesn't it look like it belongs in this beautiful seaside shot?  It's just so dang cool!

You can read about her process in choosing background colors here.

My Dear friend Katie Blakesley at Swim Bike Quilt blew me away with this quilt she calls Gallery Wall.  The squares look like individual pieces of modern art!  While we're on the subject of how awesome Katie is, you really should check out the book she co-authored with Faith Jones of Fresh Lemon Quilts, and Lee Heinrich of Freshly Pieced--Vintage Quilt Revival.  Amazon is taking pre-orders!

Holly at Bijou Lovely is moving along on her project.  I love everything Holly makes so I can't wait to see how this turns out.  Be sure to follow her progress on her lovely blog.

This Flying Geese Pillow by Rita at Red Pepper Quilts is simply charming.  I love how she used the black and white prints to highlight the colors.  This pillow cover sold pretty quickly in her shop, but she has some beautiful quilt patterns available.

Here is a no-sew project that I love.  Angela at Cut to Pieces designed this sweet pin cushion.  How clever is that?!? I may have to find a flower dish myself!

Check out the raw edge applique on these totes.  I do love dots!  Jennifer at Ellison Lane Quilts made these for her son's preschool teachers.  Wow!  It's good year if I remember to get something before the morning of the last day of school! ;-)

Happy sewing!
Laura
