UP AND AWAY by Emily Herrick

Summertime is the perfect time for a ride in a hot air balloon!  Emily Herrick takes us UP and AWAY with her newest collection of fun fabrics.
If you were at International Quilt Market in Salt Lake City, I hope you were lucky enough to see Emily's booth for yourself. It makes such an adorable room for those brothers and sisters that have to share!  I wanted to pick up the entire booth and place it in my house :)

As usual, all her projects were amazing!!  She puts so much detail into the design of her booth.  The hit of the show was the adorable hot air balloon that you can see hanging in the photo above. Soooooo many people were asking how to make it. We've finally got the answer

THANK YOU EMILY!!

Rustique by Emily Herrick

http://www.michaelmillerfabrics.com/shop/collections/rustique-by-emily-herrick.html

The idea for Rustique started over 2 years ago as a tribute to my husband. He is all about the outdoors; Mountains, wildlife and hunting are his greatest passion. I wanted to design a collection that would include some of the common rustic themes that he enjoyed but in a way that was pleasing to me. I chose some of his favorite things: Deer, Antlers and Quaking Aspens, and mixed in some of my favorite geometric elements. The images and motifs are rustic in nature but the contemporary design and vibrant color palette are the perfect combination.

I like to say that Rustique is a little bit Rustic and a little bit Chic. The masculinity of the Rustic sides shows through in Embossed, Adirondack, and Sharktooth.

We feel the femininity of the Chic side with the florals peppered about in Yes Deer and Crosscut. Of course the color palettes differentiate the rustic and chic as well.

One of my favorite prints is Park City. I like to play around with different design elements twisting and turning them to create a secondary image. The "Snowflakes" are the same deer as in the "Trophy" print. Using a hexagon shape gives this print a modern feel, while the touch of wood grain lends itself to the outdoors.
*Park City
Trophy is my second favorite print. I enjoyed taking one element and mixing it with another. Changing the antlers into branches and adding the leaves and blossoms was one of my favorite creations. I love the tiny bits of color in the blossoms on each print.
*Trophy
What's your favorite print? Maybe my twist on the Chevron or leaves?
*Feathering
*Leaf Press
Rustique fits in perfectly with the Adirondack/Aztec trend in design right now. Everywhere you look there's modern twists on these rustic designs. Several of my new quilt patterns were influenced by this design trend. My version of a medallion quilt is Jackson Hole.
The quilt is put together in sections and can easily be broken down into a block-of-the-month/week.

Tuacahn was inspired by an aztec rug I once saw. I've been saving the idea for the perfect fabric and I finally got my chance to make it with Rustique. Once I realized how easy this design would be to piece I got started and didn't stop until it was finished.
Scottsdale is a direct interpretation of a common aztec design and pieces together in a quick and easy way.
I wanted to carry the deer theme into a quilt with Big Game and use fusible applique to create a simple and graphic design.

All of these patterns and more can be found in my online shop https://www.etsy.com/shop/crazyoldladies

Designer Spotlight Friday: Emily Herrick

Hey all! I'm super excited to be here on the Michael Miller blog sharing my newest fabric collection with you.

TECHNICOLOR was born from my love of color. The color inspiration and name for this collection come from a childhood memory. I loved watching The Wizard of Oz as a child. I remember the movie starting and as the opening credits rolled "In Amazing Technicolor" flashed on the screen. The movie begins in black and white film but after Dorothy lands in Munchkin Land everything is replaced with gorgeous color. My quilt market booth theme was based on this idea. Everything in my booth was black and white except for the TECHNICOLOR fabrics which added all the color.

The process of designing this collection began with my color choices first, then I added the designs.  I love the geometric print and fun patterns. This collection actually came together quite fast. Several of the prints were originally sketched out as coordinates to other potential collections. At some point I pulled them all together into one file, added the color, and it was like magic.

Ever since the fabric landed on my doorstep I've had so much fun playing with it. The collection can be divided into three different colorways or pulled all together with dazzling results. Something different I did with this collection is with the Crosshatch prints. There are 2 colorways on each bolt meaning the purchase of a 1/2 yard yields two different fat quarters. I love this! It gives you a little more bang for your buck and allows for more variety in a project without having to spend more money.

I've designed four original quilt patterns to go with this collection. All of them are available in my etsy shop, Crazy Old Ladies, in both paper and digital format.

And as a little thank you for coming to visit me here I've designed this fun little quilt for you! You can find the pattern here.

TECHNICOLOR can be found in local quilt shops and online. And if your local quilt shop doesn't carry it, don't forget to tell them they can order it from Michael Miller Fabrics :o)

HAPPY SEWING!!
