UP AND AWAY by Emily Herrick

Summertime is the perfect time for a ride in a hot air balloon!  Emily Herrick takes us UP and AWAY with her newest collection of fun fabrics.

  If you were at International Quilt Market in Salt Lake City, I hope you were lucky enough to see Emily's booth for yourself. It makes such an adorable room for those brothers and sisters that have to share!  I wanted to pick up the entire booth and place it in my house :)

 As usual, all her projects were amazing!!  She puts so much detail into the design of her booth.  The hit of the show was the adorable hot air balloon that you can see hanging in the photo above. Soooooo many people were asking how to make it. We've finally got the answer!

Spring Quilt Market Round Up- Part 1 :)

We're back from Minneapolis and Spring Quilt Market was amazing-- I met some fantastic and talented makers and we unveiled some really great new collections and SO MANY QUILTS!! I can't wait to share what's happening with Michael Miller this season! But, for now, I'm going to give you a sneak peek into the QM booth...

Here we are after a few days of setup in front of Violet Craft's infamous Jungle Abstractions Lion quilt...

Quilt Market Prep :: Minneapolis or Bust!

It's a Fiesta! Quilt Market 2014 Recap...

It was all about bright colors and a fiesta in the Michael Miller booth at Quilt Market! The inside of the booth was decorated with paper flowers, paper garland and an array of beautiful quilts made from the Fiesta Collection. (I'll post them below along with links to all of the patterns.) But first, set-up! 

 Quilt Market reminds me of a theater production- probably because I studied theater and costumes  in school but also because you start with an empty space, build your booth and then break it all down to the same empty space. There's definitely something magical about it...

The framework is starting to go up...

Rustique by Emily Herrick

The idea for Rustique started over 2 years ago as a tribute to my husband. He is all about the outdoors; Mountains, wildlife and hunting are his greatest passion. I wanted to design a collection that would include some of the common rustic themes that he enjoyed but in a way that was pleasing to me. I chose some of his favorite things: Deer, Antlers and Quaking Aspens, and mixed in some of my favorite geometric elements. The images and motifs are rustic in nature but the contemporary design and vibrant color palette are the perfect combination. 

I like to say that Rustique is a little bit Rustic and a little bit Chic. The masculinity of the Rustic sides shows through in Embossed, Adirondack, and Sharktooth.

We feel the femininity of the Chic side with the florals peppered about in Yes Deer and Crosscut. Of course the color palettes differentiate the rustic and chic as well.

One of my favorite prints is Park City. I like to play around with different design elements twisting and turning them to create a secondary image. The "Snowflakes" are the same deer as in the "Trophy" print. Using a hexagon shape gives this print a modern feel, while the touch of wood grain lends itself to the outdoors.

Trophy is my second favorite print. I enjoyed taking one element and mixing it with another. Changing the antlers into branches and adding the leaves and blossoms was one of my favorite creations. I love the tiny bits of color in the blossoms on each print.

Rustique fits in perfectly with the Adirondack/Aztec trend in design right now. Everywhere you look there's modern twists on these rustic designs. Several of my new quilt patterns were influenced by this design trend. My version of a medallion quilt is Jackson Hole.

The quilt is put together in sections and can easily be broken down into a block-of-the-month/week. 

Tuacahn was inspired by an aztec rug I once saw. I've been saving the idea for the perfect fabric and I finally got my chance to make it with Rustique. Once I realized how easy this design would be to piece I got started and didn't stop until it was finished. 

Scottsdale is a direct interpretation of a common aztec design and pieces together in a quick and easy way. 

I wanted to carry the deer theme into a quilt with Big Game and use fusible applique to create a simple and graphic design.
